THAT the Comox Valley Regional District support the Coastal Communities Social Procurement Initiative and join as a member for two years for a cost of $2,448 per year, to be funded by the electoral area administration service;

AND FURTHER THAT staff be authorized to select and pilot social and sustainable procurement concepts in future procurements and report back to the board in the fall on the outcomes.

WHEREAS single use plastic bags are a major contributor to pollution;

AND WHEREAS it is in the best interest of the health and welfare of the residents of the Comox Valley to restrict the proliferation of single-use plastics;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Comox Valley Regional District Board encourages its member municipalities and all businesses within the region to restrict the use of single-use plastic bags.

THAT the Comox Valley Regional District write to the Province of British Columbia to request province-wide business regulations to reduce single-use plastic bags and disposable plastic packaging.

Recommendation:
 
THAT subject to the Hornby Island Community Economic Enhancement Corporation and the Denman Works! Economic Enhancement Society preparing the grant application and providing all reporting requirements, the board authorizes the Comox Valley Regional District to submit a grant application to the Connecting BC program, administered through the Northern Development Initiative Trust, for high speed internet connectivity on Denman and Hornby Islands;

AND FURTHER THAT, if the grant application is successful, the Comox Valley Regional District administer the grant funding on behalf of the Hornby Island Community Economic Enhancement Corporation and the Denman Works! Economic Enhancement Society for the high speed internet connectivity initiative.
